Principles of Biology

To introduce you to the levels of biological organization, last time you went outside and attempted to find pictures for as many levels of biological organization you could.

Those levels are as follows -->
atoms
molecules
organelles
cells
tissues
organs
organ systems
organisms
species/population
community
ecosystem
biosphere

For each of these levels on your post, include a picture, and also include a brief description of that level on your post. For the levels that you could not actually find pictures of, be sure to include a picture you had found on the internet.

An Atom is the smallest component of life; it begins the levels of organization.

A molecule is the simplest structure of an element or compound. It's more than one atom bonded together.

An organelle is a specialized subunit with in a cell. It has it's own function to make the cell run. An example would be the picture above. Look at the Nucleus and the Mitochondrion, those are organelles.

Cells are the smallest unit of an organism. It can from to create tissue. It also can be independent to from life. This is where life starts.

Tissue is a group of cells having a similiar structure or function. Tissue is found in an organ and organism, found in the picture above.

An organ is a tissue that creates a specific function to help the body. Such as the stomach and heart.

An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform a task. Above are some examples of an organ system.

An organism is a living thing that can act independently on it's own. For example, I have my pet cat, Moe, in the picture. Moe is alive and can be independent.

Species are a specific group of living organisms; they can breed with eachother. For example, wild turkeys. They can breed with eachother and they are a specific organism.

A community consists of at least two species that are interdependent. For example, I have my Brother and Grandma with our cats. The cats depend on my Grandma to feed them and she depends on them for affection.

An ecosystem is a community interacting with eachother in a certain area. Above I have a picture or Artic/Ocean. The Organism live and interact with eachother.

A biosphere is the sum of all ecosystems. Basically, it's Earth, the whole thing.

-This is what I found of an atom.

-This is a molecule.

-This is a cell... with organells individually labeled.

-These are cells found on a leaf. (I did not take this)

-This is human skin, or tissue rather.

-This is a human brain, representing an organ.

-This is a coral polyp, labeled are it's seperate organs; therefore, an organ system.

-This is a picture of Taylor Woodruff (hand) holding a cricket. The cricket represents a species.

-You can't see it very well, but this is a picture of a whole bunch of water bugs. The water bugs represent a population, community and ecosystem.

- Lastly, I have a biosphere.

Umm... my biosphere magically placed itself 1st... It's suppose to be last... But you understand ;)

yaya i found a site i really like that helped me out a lot! it broke the structure of the cell down into 3 categories then broke it down even more within those categories it was straight down to the point and helped me remember all the parts.

In this website, I thought it interesting, yet simple. Check it out for yourself. :) I couldn't find any credibility on it, though. But when I went to the homepage, it came from a secondary school. That's as far as I could go regarding credibility…

I feel kind of lame having the last three posts on this! But Aziz and I had a discussion and it turns out our video is kind of the same! Mine has the music and a newscast, while whoever did Aziz's took the animation and narrated it. So I thought I w…

When I started my research I searched for “cellular structure and function” and even know Mr. Nash said not to just choose the first thing that pops up, but in this case the first two links that popped up were the same website called Cellular Biolog…

I was ultimately against posting a video, and doing an actual website.. BUT I really love this video from Harvard. It shows you what goes on inside the cell. It's set to beautiful background music, and I think it shows how much "art" is really insid…
