Principles of Biology

This interactive multimedia experience is brought to you by HHMI, The Howard Hughes Medical Institute. This is one of the more well-constructed online tutorials over a sophisticated piece of science knowledge that I have seen. It really stood out a few years back when I first engaged in the website myself.

So what did you learn from this online experience? What kinds of facts about gender did you learn that are beyond the coverage of your college-level textbook? What is a "big picture" thing you learned from doing this? Did you enjoy this experience over a more traditional classroom experience?

So... what does it truly mean to be "female" from a biological perspective?

I could not get over this activity! I learned a lot of stuff that I would never imagine. This activity shows that just because you appear to be female on the outside doesn't mean there might not be a genetic mutation on the inside of your body. I would have never of guessed that your gender could be put on discussion because of a mutation. I never something like this exsisted. I definitely enjoyed this activity more than a classroom activity. You were able to explore more options independetely and take your time and discover what you wanted. I wish we had more things like these. I love the hands-on stuff.

I happen to think this site is really stinking wierd!!! There is some possible way for me to be a man and not know it?! WOW now im just scared. That would be pretty tramatic i'd think to assume your a woman your a whole life and have the genitials to prove it and then find out your a MAN-ish anyways.... I never would have thought that there is a gray area when it comes to gender determination, now im starting to realize science is NEVER black and white.

This website was very interesting. Everyone judges whether you are female or male just by looking at physical appearances. I didnt realize that there could be things inside of you that totally change your genetic makeup. I learned that just because you look like a female you might not be on the inside. I thought it was strange that the athlete had an x and y chromosome but still appeared female. I do think it's interesting that there are some abnomalities out there and makes me want to ask lots of questions. I really enjoyed this expierience because it went in-depth on the whole female/male thing.

I appreciate your reflection in the final paragraph. It is a huge difference. It is big enough that is takes an adjustment period to fully take over your own learning... and wrestle it from those who would choose to spoon-feed it to you. Trust me,...

I learned a lot about "healthy" and "unhealthy" foods doing this project... Most food that society considers "healthy" really isn't and I'm glad I learned how to determine if it's not. My healthy food was a Quaker Chewy Granola Bar: Chocolate Chi...
