What's hiding underneath your shirt? Have you taken a good look at what is on your plate? What kind of molecules live in your body? Simple everyday wonders turn into facts real quick. Many don't realize the reality of what they are feeding their stomaches. Yes, it may be growling, but no need to abuse it! Watching what you consume is easy if you give it the time and thought. The most important part is understanding it's structure and how it functions. With this information you'll be a pro at nut… Continue

The dictionary defines science as “a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws”. I like the definition out of our text book better, “a way of knowing, one that is based on inquiry” (Essential Biology) Science is… Continue

Attention Principles of Biology peeps!
I've figured out the problem with persistently linking (i.e. creating a hyperlink you can revisit) to articles in our databases and made a screencast of the process required to acquire these links:
One note . . . the extra step I did in Firefox by going to Tools --> Clear Private Data isn't a necessary step to use the link. I just simply had to do that to clear my cookies/session variables so that you could see I was once again getti… Continue
Hello, Principles of Biology!
This is Mrs. Corey posting as Benton Library. I really enjoyed speaking with you yesterday and I definitely hope you'll visit the library anytime you need research help. :)

Linked below is a copy of the Marine Biology information packet for the upcoming 2009-2010 class.
Pay particular attention to the dates for enrollment on page 5. The first important date coming up is
the "informational meeting" this THURSDAY NIGHT, May 14th, in room #307 at 7:00pm.… Continue

Guess what: our shiny little network has recently made the final nomination cut for the Eddies... the 2008 Edublogs Awards. Principles of Biology was nominated in the category of "best educational use of a social networking service." Our site made the final cut from all original nominees and is now open for voting.
I was not aware that the site was nominated until I was voting there, category by category myself, and was quite s… Continue

Before you ever put a piece of food in your mouth do you think to read the label? Who knows what it contains or the nutrition value it has. I bet that doesn't even cross your mind. Just because the label reads low in fat doesn't make it healthy. If you continue reading your probably going to find that it's high in sodium or cholesterol. This chapter has impacted me greatly because it helps me to plan smarter eating habits and I also realized that food can be broken down many ways.
I never reali… Continue

There are a lot more to carbohydrates than you would think. There are many different types of carbs and I don't think a lot of people realize that. There are monosaccharides that includes: glucose, fructose, and galactose. Monosaccharides give you high en… Continue

When I signed up for this class, I had no idea that we would be doing chemistry as well. In my advanced chemistry class, we are learning about some of the same basic concepts, so it was somewhat easy to pick up. The one thing out of this subject that surprised me the most was the complexity of sugars and proteins. You usually don't think about tho… Continue
In this unit, we covered everything from diets to the correct calories on a food label. We even brought in some chemistry when we discussed molecules like: water and sugar. In class we discussed sugar in terms of carbohydrates, and the various forms it has. Then we discussed lipids and how they can be polar and nonpolar. Then we touched on proteins. We even learned how to calculate the real amount of calories in a food item.
There are many types of diets; some diets tell you, "No carbohydrates,… Continue

Heres why this biochemistry class added knowledge to my life so far , first of all the biological organizations refreshed my mind on exactly what each level does. From the tissue level to the cellular level all this helped me understand and acknowledge how each level has a specific function in our everyday community. The ecosystem level i found most interesting because i previously always used to get this level mixed up with the community and population levels, but after doing several projects o… Continue

Do you really know what goes in your body and the effect that it has on you?
I do now that I had this biology class. We have study and learned the effects of everything from Carbohydrates (monosaccharide, disaccharides, and Polysaccharides) to the well-known Proteins made up of Amino Acids, and everything in between.
So now your asking why does this matter to me, well it does and not just because w… Continue

Well in this relatively short unit I think that one of the most important things I learned was how little I really know about the things that go in my body.
Take water for example, you take a drink it cools you off. Then you go on your happy way. But did you know that each little drop of water is made up of tons of molecules. And each molecule is made of thr… Continue

In this section I got a better look on what biochemistry was. Its amazing how much makes up just one small atom. I never realized what all went into the making of one. Like how Carbon needs 8 electrons to be stable which allows for it to have 4 covalent bonds.
One thing I learned that got me excited was when we covered… Continue

In this unit, it cleared up more than half of my diet misconceptions. Dieting isn't all about what you are eating, it's about what your body needs and how it will use the things you take in. You can eat all of the groups respectfully and will maintain a healthy weight. In class we broke down different things you put into your body and discussed what purpose they served and how your body responds to them. We also learned that our bodies are chalked full of different enzymes to break down most of… Continue

Sorry this is so late but....

So through the last two class periods, I've figured out that anything about dieting that I thought I knew was all a misconception. Like all the media and advertisements about low carbs, zero trans fat, and just the way people think, has been prett...
Thanks for the kind words about Miss Delaney. ;)
I agree about the color of the meal. I think we can be lead astray by that if we include a lot of processed foods. However, with mostly whole foods... or items with only few ingredients... I think ...
I do agree with Hunter.I think the easiest way to tell quickly that this meal is probably not really bad, without being really scientific, is only to look at all the different colors at that one plate. It has about 8 colors in it... And our brain ...

Yuck!! What were my parents thinking when they were feeding me this stuff. It's basically leftovers of other animals that they didn't need just combined into one thing.
