Principles of Biology

When I signed up for this class, I had no idea that we would be doing chemistry as well. In my advanced chemistry class, we are learning about some of the same basic concepts, so it was somewhat easy to pick up. The one thing out of this subject that surprised me the most was the complexity of sugars and proteins. You usually don't think about those things when you eat food, but you're really consuming stuff that will take specific enzymes and a lot of energy to break down. Who knew something so small could pack such a punch!

Another thing I thought was interesting was when we went in depth with the food label study. When I pick up a candy bar, I never really took the time to see what I was consuming. We learned the complexity of simple (monosaccharides) sugars, disaccharides, and polysaccharides Now I know the breakdown of the food labels, and i can easily decipher it, so I know how many Carbs, Fats, and Proteins I need to consume to meet my daily recommendation and to keep that ratio in check to maintain healthy eating habits.

Lastly, another great thing we did was the construction lab. Even though it was very difficult, and our parts were very sticky.... it still helped me understand the building blocks of biochemistry. It also showed me how Carbon is in every natural compound, it is essentially the building block of life.

Hey Korby the next time you post somthing like this make it know because I had no idea that you had done this. I did realy like the way you mentiond how coples the so called "simple sugurs" were. it didn't seem so simple when we were trying to build them with those sticky kits. The only thing I didn't like about your post was the fact that you never mentioned your lab partner that day : ). I'm just kidding, but seriously let the rest of us know when you do extra stuff like this because it definatly an interesting read.

yaya i found a site i really like that helped me out a lot! it broke the structure of the cell down into 3 categories then broke it down even more within those categories it was straight down to the point and helped me remember all the parts.

In this website, I thought it interesting, yet simple. Check it out for yourself. :) I couldn't find any credibility on it, though. But when I went to the homepage, it came from a secondary school. That's as far as I could go regarding credibility…

I feel kind of lame having the last three posts on this! But Aziz and I had a discussion and it turns out our video is kind of the same! Mine has the music and a newscast, while whoever did Aziz's took the animation and narrated it. So I thought I w…

When I started my research I searched for “cellular structure and function” and even know Mr. Nash said not to just choose the first thing that pops up, but in this case the first two links that popped up were the same website called Cellular Biolog…

I was ultimately against posting a video, and doing an actual website.. BUT I really love this video from Harvard. It shows you what goes on inside the cell. It's set to beautiful background music, and I think it shows how much "art" is really insid…
