Principles of Biology

Before you ever put a piece of food in your mouth do you think to read the label? Who knows what it contains or the nutrition value it has. I bet that doesn't even cross your mind. Just because the label reads low in fat doesn't make it healthy. If you continue reading your probably going to find that it's high in sodium or cholesterol. This chapter has impacted me greatly because it helps me to plan smarter eating habits and I also realized that food can be broken down many ways.

I never realized there were so many sugars, and based on your activities there's one that's better for you than the others. If you're a long distance runner you need the food that's going to last you for an extended amount and won't break down very easily (fast). You need something like a polysaccharide, more specifically a starch or a fiber.

Certain people's bodies react to foods differently. Some of them need more of one thing than others. Like for me, being a cheerleader, I need a little bit of polysaccharides to give me the energy to help my muscles make it through our whole routinue, but at the same time I could use some disaccharides to "set the bomb off" in my routinue. It gives me the head start that I need to take on the competition. This particular section of the unit helped me chose the diet that was appropriate for my lifestyle and I.

Diets can be very complicated. You have to make sure your not cutting out too much of one thing. Moderation is the key to everything. You don't want to splurge too much on one thing, it can leave your body in stress and cause some problems. Just because you see a diet, doesn't mean it's guaranteed. Everyone reacts differently to things. Bodies NEVER work the same. Individuality is everything. You need to create a diet that is just for you and will satisfy your everyday life, the chaos it contains and the leisurely activities it holds. Sometimes you need to look into the past and what heredity is going to stick you with. Is Kidney or Heart Disease a major factor in it? You never know. Research shows that blood types "ask" for certain things in your diet. But in the long run I could go on and on about this topic, the point is do what is good for you.

I absolutely LOVED this chapter! It just put everything into perspecitve for me. It showed me that everyone needs to learn about this, I see it as being another fundamental of life.

In this website, I thought it interesting, yet simple. Check it out for yourself. :) I couldn't find any credibility on it, though. But when I went to the homepage, it came from a secondary school. That's as far as I could go regarding credibility…

I feel kind of lame having the last three posts on this! But Aziz and I had a discussion and it turns out our video is kind of the same! Mine has the music and a newscast, while whoever did Aziz's took the animation and narrated it. So I thought I w…

When I started my research I searched for “cellular structure and function” and even know Mr. Nash said not to just choose the first thing that pops up, but in this case the first two links that popped up were the same website called Cellular Biolog…

I was ultimately against posting a video, and doing an actual website.. BUT I really love this video from Harvard. It shows you what goes on inside the cell. It's set to beautiful background music, and I think it shows how much "art" is really insid…

I like this site a lot... It's kind of boring-ish... But the way it chunks information and how it's worded is easy for me to understand. Kudos, Shandis.

I used it in Zoology my sophomore year and I remembered it was a really great learning tool. Thanks :)

Actually, no... I didn't read about the background knowledge of Mr. Sullivan. He is a very accomplished man... This site a quite creditable... Yes, sadly it is a little out dated. But I still dig it... :)
