Do you really know what goes in your body and the effect that it has on you?
I do now that I had this biology class. We have study and learned the effects of everything from Carbohydrates (monosaccharide, disaccharides, and Polysaccharides) to the well-known Proteins made up of Amino Acids, and everything in between.
So now your asking why does this matter to me, well it does and not just because we are told it does but because without these things you would not be alive. The breakdown of these molecules are what runs our bodies, such as
Glucose, a monosaccharide, in the body when broken-down gives you high energy in short bursts because it breaks down very rapidly. Where as our disaccharides such a
sucrose, or table sugar, gives you high energy in a little longer bursts and breaks down somewhat rapidly. So if you are a sprinter and need energy in a quick amount of time then a monosaccharide and a disaccharide would be a carbohydrate of your choice. Many people though are not a short-term runner and need energy for an extended period of time, you need a
polysaccharide such as starch that breaks down slowly and gives you high energy. This is just the carbohydrate that helps you. Now your saying okay great I am done all I need in life is carbohydrates, and you would again be misled….
Proteins are made up of many
Amino Acids, which are a combination of Hydrogen, Carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, along with a certain functional group, these proteins give you the strength that is needed to provide you with your everyday living. Protein will work together to achieve a particular function, and often associate to form stable complexes.
Now lets talk about lipids these are our fats, oils and waxes that are created in life. These are the “Saturated Fats” and “Unsaturated Fats” that you hear about almost everyday. These unsaturated fats have a polar end, or Hydrophilic end, and a non-polar end, or a Hydrophobic end, this allows the well known oil to water experiment, the experiment that water and oil will not ever mix because the hydrophobic end will never touch water.

So lets sum this all up Carbohydrates are needed to produce your energy needed everyday and proteins will form together to achieve a particular function, lipids are the unsaturated and saturated fats we hear of all the time and oils and water will never mix.
Now look at this in a way of life, when you look at the nutritional facts label on the back of every food in the world you will see many things but among these things you will find Fats, Proteins and Carbohydrates these all in some form equal the number of calories in that food item. So you take the number of carbohydrates and multiply it by 4 then take your proteins and multiply it by 4 and lastly take your fats and multiply it by 9 and add those totals together, this will give you your actual number of calories in that food item. Then divide your number by the total and then you have your percent of the calories that item is.
So now that you understand that all of this is important to you are a more intelligent human being!!!!
